Benefits of Art Appreciation

So this week, I had the pleasure of hosting my cousin at my apartment. One of the best things that we took the time to do was visit the Harn Museum. It's so easy to forget about local museums and how useful they are. Spending time at a museum is not only a great way to pass the day, but also teaches you so much.

Getting the most out of art is simple and not this high society, bourgeois thing that isn't available to everyone.

Consider the following:
  • Suppress your initial reaction of acceptance or denial, i.e. I like it or I don't. Just take it in. Stand with the piece (I know it sounds corny but really just stand with it)
  • What do you feel? What emotions do you see? What emotions do you feel?
  • Look at the picture differently, read it left to right, up down, right to left, down up. See it differently. Couldn't we do this in our own lives?
  • Where does the picture take you? I mean both literally to what location but also does it remind you of a time in your life?
For me art is about feeling and where it takes you. So a museum gives you limitless opportunities to feel, experience, travel, and remember.

Where will your next gallery take you?
