Office Space Costs A Cup of Coffee

Starbucks (or your independent hipster cafe of choice) has become the new office space or library. More and more students and professionals are escaping to cafes to get their work done. But this isn't a free for all. You can't just set up shop like you are home in bed, have some respect for those around you.

So most likely you are in a cafe now reading this and I would encourage you to get yourself in check.

Make Sure You:
  • Buy something! It's a recession and rent isn't free, keep the cafe you love in business
  • Treat your Barista with respect don't squawk your order. If you frequent the location, introduce yourself and always start with a salutation. NEVER begin with "Give me a Carmel Macchiato." A "Good Afternoon" is always in order.
  • Leave if it gets busy and new people can't get a seat (assuming you've been there for 3+ hours). You aren't paying for that seat, share
  • Watch your neighbor's stuff when they step away, you will need to pee after that Venti Long Named Drink you just chugged, so take care of each other.
Make Sure You Do Not:
  • Spread your work everywhere, keep your paper together, or go paperless and save the environment
  • Scream into your cell phone. I have gone on about this before but it is all the more rude in a coffee shop. We are all working/studying there is no need to tell your friend about last night's mistake, I can go on Texts From Last Night and read about it myself
  • Treat the Barista like a secretary, they don't work for you, so remember to let them do their job and you do yours.
  • Listen to anything without headphones. If you are watching some boot-leg Harry Potter, I don't need to hear it too. Headphones are always appropriate, we don't have the musical taste, let me jam privately.
Support your local Cafe's and respect your fellow patrons.

A virtual office space doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s physically non-existent. In fact, it is a space in a particular building or location that is leased for a reasonable amount and has the same features as a regular office. The difference however is that a normal office space is usually abuzz with people and equipment, while a virtual workplace contains minimal equipment and is used primarily as a business address to send and receive letters to and from the company.

That is very true! Thanks for your input! I think people are going to really start favoring that type of virtual office if they need a physical office space. Now, many times a traditional office is just an extra cost without the benefits it used to provide!
